In the dim glow of a candle
In the darkest part of the night
The old clock on the mantle
Swings its pendulum left and right

Embers in the fire place
Were waiting to be fed
Dying from the fast pace
Consumed in their fire bed

With goose quill in his hand
The old man signed his name
A petition to save his land
And traditional family name

Those who further public good
To take what isn’t theirs
To take house and field and wood
Don’t care whose sweat it bears

They don’t think of the memories
The laughter or the tears
Losses from an early freeze
It all falls on deaf ears

In the dim glow of the candle
In the darkest part of the night
The old clock on the mantle
Ticks steadily until light
