The Five and Ten

It was just a place for notions
The small town five and ten
But there was always a commotion
When the new fabric came in

Velour for the new prom dress
In green and blue and red
Herringbone for the old man’s vest
White cotton sheets for the bed

Flannel for the winter shirt
Denim for a pair of pants
Pink for sister’s poodle skirt
Pink ribbon for the dance

Mother oiled her trusty Singer
And bought nearly seven yards
Washed and through the ringer
With bobby socks and leotards
